The use of herbs for medicinal purposes can be traced back to the Egyptians around 1500 BC. Many people still rely on herbal remedies because their safety and effectiveness have not changed over time. A common external form for herbal remedies is salves, “an ointment used to promote healing of the skin or as protection” (Oxford Dictionary). Salves are usually a combination of herbs, beeswax (for vegans Carnauba Wax) and oil. Two herbs used in salves are Calendula and Comfrey.
